You can’t run a profitable online business if you don’t have a good website. So many internet marketers try to cut corners when it comes to website design and content. If you want to run a successful online business, you have to put some effort into building a good website. Whatever time it takes to make an attractive website that is appealing to visitors should be considered a necessary investment in your future success. It is not really very hard to create a website that looks good and runs efficiently. You can have a website that brings lots of traffic and sales if you use some of these tips and guidelines.
Don’t assume that the code you are using is correct until you verify it. While you may use one of the widely available free templates to create your website, you’ll probably want to make some modifications to the code to make the site unique. You do not have to know a lot about coding to do this.
However, it’s easy to make little mistakes, so you should always check for things like typos or breaks in the code. A website where the code has not been correctly entered may not load, or it may look strange, misaligned or have other mistakes. Some mistakes aren’t immediately obvious; if you want to check for errors you may have missed, use the CSS Validator.
Don’t install sound on your website that plays automatically when someone enters. When someone enters your site and immediately has to listen to a sound or watch a video, it can be annoying. If someone is hit by a sound when they find your site, it’s very easy for them to click away if they don’t like it. It’s fine to have an audio or video feature on your site, but the visitor should be able to decide whether or not to hear or watch it. You could be losing many sales if you have potentially annoying automated features that drive people away.
Using popup windows is another way to potentially lose many of your visitors before they check out your site.
When someone visits your site they want to read the site, not be assaulted by an automatic pop up window that is difficult to close, especially if that pop up requires the entering of any kind of personal information. It’s not a good idea to force your visitors to view things like popups when they enter your site. If you are using popups, you could be driving away many potential buyers from your site!
Something else some websites do that you should not copy is having a popup window that makes it hard for someone to leave your site. When visitors decide that they want to leave your site, they should be able to easily go. Having popup windows that ask them if they really want to leave or try to sell them something on the way out will not make them feel like staying longer. Remember, when visitors leave there’s always a chance they will return at another time, but they won’t if you throw annoying popups in their faces.
There are lots of things that you can do to make sure your site is as successful as possible. The good news is that most of these things do not take a whole lot of time (especially if you do them every day). You can educate yourself further, and use your own common sense on these issues.
