Popup Window
A popup window is really just a smaller web page that pops up suddenly to display an advertisement. A pop up window is often called a pop up ad, yet to be a true pop up it must pop up over the web page that the user is viewing; the opposite of a pop up is a pop down ad, in which the pop up appears underneath the web page the user is viewing and remains there until the viewer notices and closes it.
##
Many times, advertisements are displayed when a new popup window appears on the screen. This type of window is also referred to as popup ad. Pop up ads actually pop up above the original web page that you were viewing, not beneath. Ads that utilize a pop up screen and pop under the original page are referred to as pop down ads or pop under ads. Most often, these ads are not seen until the user is ready to close out their browser; then the pop under ad becomes visible.
##
Advertisers make use of both popup ads and pop under ads to let people know about products and services their website is offering. A pop under add appears in a popup window below the original web page. These types of ads are hidden for a reason; it is hoped that once the browser is closed the user will see the ad and stop to take a look. Pop up ads work the opposite way. The ad pops up above the original web page and will need to be closed out or minimized in order to view the original web page again.

If you are a frequent Internet surfer, then you most likely are familiar with popup advertisements. These ads are used to advertise different items online when certain websites are viewed. The viewer will witness a popup window when it appears on their screen. It will display the product information and will need to be closed out in order to view the original web page. Pop under ads or pop down ads are ads that appear underneath the web page that the user was viewing.
Pop up windows can be initiated by different things that the Internet user may do on a web page. An open window of an Internet browser can have backend scripting that will initiate a pop up ad to open in a new popup window. Such actions that cause these windows to open include clicking on advertisements in the browser window, prompting new downloads, and simply allowing certain web page windows to open. A pop up ad may be more effective in advertising because it requires the internet user to perform an action. They can actively view the advertisement but they must click to close it, in order to view the page they were viewing before.

When an individual visits a website, there are different actions that may cause a popup window to open. One action that can activate the pop up may be the simple act of clicking on an ad, while another action may be downloading something from the website. While these may seem like innocent enough tasks, they can cause annoying popups to open up, and once open, the user must click in order to close it. When the ad has been closed, the viewer is again able to continue looking at the original page.
##
Depending on how the scripting on the website is set up, an ad's popup window will appear when certain actions are completed. Some popup ads open when new areas of the website are entered. Others open when certain elements of the website are clicked on; while other pages are set up so that the popups will load once the user attempts to download something. The popup advertisement is viewed by many advertisers a highly effective way of getting their information seen, because the popup is automatically viewed when the pop up box opens above the original web page.
Specific scripting is responsible for the annoying pop ups, such as JavaScript. The pop up image or pop up ad is usually just an advertisement attempting to induce shopping and impulse buying; however, some are spyware popups that allow computer viruses to infiltrate your computer hardware. Some can cause a seemingly endless stream of pop up windows to plague your computer screen, with more pop up windows popping up to replace each one that is closed.
New downloads are being created to block pop ups. Such programs stop pop ups by disabling the JavaScript menu that activates the popup window, thus not allowing it to pop up when the different triggering actions of the Internet user are innocently done. Popup killers will often display how many pop up ads were blocked since the Internet page was first opened. Some popup killers will not work on pop under ads, so a different blocking service may need to be downloaded and installed.

For those who vehemently dislike pop up ads, pop up killers can be used to stop popups, by disabling the script that is designed to initiate the popup. There are many pop up killers that will give you information about how many pop ups have been stopped while visiting a particular website and will keep a running count of them. Popup killers or popup blockers normally work on all new popup window ad applications; however, there are some that will not block pop under ads. If the individual is looking to stop both pop under and pop up ads, then they will most likely have to search for an application that makes the claim of taking care of both types of ads.

Pop up ads can be very annoying, and for this reason many people choose to use a pop up blocker or killer to keep popups from opening in a popup window. Most popup blockers or killers work on a multitude of popup advertisements; however, not all of them work on pop down or popup under ads. Some pop up killers work on both applications and will make this claim in their information, which is most often viewed before the user downloads it. Most popup killers also have a counter that will tell you how many popups have been blocked while the blocker or killer was in use.

The "Close Window" Command
In relation to pop up ads and pop under ads, the commands of the language javascript can be manipulated to perform various other actions, along with the action of closing a window. In a new trend of click-jacking, the act of a user pressing the "x" button on a pop up ad cannot only cause the popups to close but can also prompt a virus or spy-ware program to initiate as a new download onto the computer's hard drive. The virus may initiate numerous more pop up windows to open.
JS
JS menus are activated when the person surfing the internet interacts with the webpages they are viewing. These interactions can include clicking on active links or scrolling over highlighted phrases or words. Javascript allows the clickable link to direct the user to a new page that contains the information they desire.
Defeating Popups
Tech support people are always amazed by the level of incompetence that many computer users show. It is not uncommon for an untrained computer user to inadvertently download a vicious software program that fills their computer screen with popups and allows for viruses and Trojans. The problem could be easily avoided had the user bought computer software protection.
